I remember in Home Ec class in Middle School we all WAITED for our turn to get to make puppy chow. The favorite treat so famous that we even sold it for fundraisers. We coveted that recipe and made it ENDLESSLY at home.
Much of that stopped with all the changes in diet due to our different family needs. In fact, for a period of time, my oldest son responded negatively to all 8 of the top food allergens. I tell you, you get pretty creative when you're trying to find treats they want to eat outside of the normal fruit and vegetable regimen.
Over time, I created something that at least is similar to the famous and favorite puppy chow! This recipe avoids all of the typical allergy intolerant reactions because it doesn't contain any of the problematic phenolic foods like chocolate. But believe me it's just as tasty, and even if you don't have the food allergies but you'd like a healthier version of "Puppy Chow", I'd give this a shot.
6 cups of corn Chex cereal or natural variety
1/2 stick of butterÂ
1/2 cup honey
1/2 jar of sun butter
3 Tablespoons carob powderÂ
It's a super easy recipe for a very tasty treat. Simply melt the butter and honey and bring to boil. Then add the sun butter. Blend well. Â
Use a plastic bowl that has a cover, medium to large size so the cereal can toss around.
Pour the peanut butter mixture on top of the dry cereal and stir until coated. Â
Sprinkle the carob powder on top, cover and shake until coated evenly.
Remove the cover and allow to cool and crisp up before you cover it for storage (If there's any left)
*I use carob powder to avoid all of the phenolic intolerances in foods. If you prefer, you can use unsweetened cocoa powder instead.
